Bentonite

What it is

Bentonite

Natural clay rich in smectite-group minerals, especially montmorillonite. Its defining feature is high absorption, swelling and cation exchange capacity, which explains its use as binder, adsorbent and mineral support.

What it delivers

  • Binder for granules, pellets, fertilisers and mineral blends.
  • Adsorbent: retains water, cations and certain organic compounds.
  • In sandy soils and substrates it can improve water retention and exchange capacity.
  • Component for pellets, carriers, formulations and animal nutrition, subject to quality and registration.

Applications

Applications

  • 01

    Binder for granules and pellets.

  • 02

    Mineral adsorbent.

  • 03

    Carrier or support in formulations.

  • 04

Improved retention in blends and substrates.

  • 05

    Agro-industrial use in mineral products.

How it works

How it works

Not all bentonites are alike: sodium, calcium and activated grades behave very differently. Each agricultural use requires a defined bentonite type, swelling capacity, moisture, particle size, cation exchange capacity, heavy-metal content, end-use compatibility and applicable registration. Retention benefits should not be generalised to every soil.

  1. 01

    Montmorillonita

    Expandable 2:1 layered clay

  2. 02

    H₂O

    Swelling, sealing and moisture retention

  3. 03

    CIC

    High cation exchange capacity

  4. 04

    Adsorción

    Holds nutrients and clarifies liquids
